A new multi-block student accommodation scheme near Wolverhampton rail station and city centre required an assessment of rail noise and vibration, along with an evaluation of road noise.

The four blocks comprise 666 bedroom spaces with 100 studio apartments and the client, Victoria Hall Limited, required accommodation in which students could carry out academic work without being disturbed by road and rail traffic.

Noise Modelling

Using cadnaA modelling, Red Acoustics ensured that cost-effective glazing and ventilation specifications complied with strict local authority criteria.

The Red Acoustics team additionally assessed the sound insulation performance of the modular construction so that it satisfied Building Regulations requirements.

The scheme involved Red Acoustics working closely with O’Connell East Architects – with whom we have collaborated productively on several projects – to ensure the design was completely effective.

We were also appointed by Fleming Construction to undertake pre-completion tests on site to verify that the acoustic criteria had been satisfied.

In addition, rail noise ingress measurements also confirmed that the glazing and ventilation specification met planning criteria.

The result is a very successful design, conducive to student lifestyles and academic work.
