The land data and mapping specialist found that 61% of respondents stated that the Environmental Protection Act had the biggest impact on their business of any recent regulatory change – way ahead of the Water and Soil Framework Directives.
What’s more, Government policy to secure a minimum of 60% of new housing on Brownfield sites is driving land remediation, while landfill tax exemption for contaminated material is due to be phased out by April 2012. The change is designed to encourage remediation of contaminated land, and could impact significantly on the costs involved in regenerating brownfield sites. Construction and regeneration specialists will need to be aware of exactly what the soil holds in store.
Tools such as Landmark’s Envirocheck can save considerable time in identifying contaminated sites and even pinpointing likely causes of contamination. In particular, its recently enhanced Historical Maps can help to identify now defunct industry such as tanneries and chemical works, providing clues that can save vital time for environmental consultants, utilities companies and other contaminated land specialists.
David Mole, Managing Director at Landmark Environment, said:
“Feedback from our customers has revealed that regulatory drivers like the Environmental Protection Act are having an impact, and we want to work with them to mitigate these effects and even to maximise the opportunities available.
“Building an accurate picture of what has taken place on a site through its history is vital, and we have enhanced our historical maps offering to improve the quality and ease of use.
“Our small scale historical mapping is now greyscale to produce a crisper image, and we have expanded our County Series mapping volumes and made it easier to move between different historical maps. Existing customers can already benefit from this enhanced service.”
Landmark has 14 years experience with historical mapping and Envirocheck historical maps also include Russian Maps, Historical Aerial Photography and Historical buildings plans.
