Glossary - Desertification
Desertification refers to the loss of quality of land in exceptionally dry areas, and takes place principally because of human activities and climate fluctuations. Amongst its effects is a reduction in the variety of organisms living within the area (known as biodiversity). The acts that, historically, have led to desertification include over-cultivation, overgrazing and deforestation, as well as climate change.
