Lamborghini's CO2 Emission Reduction Measures
Posted by Environmental News Transport Correspondent on 08/06/2009 - 12:10:00
World-renowned Italian sports car manufacturer Lamborghini has announced details of the measures it will take to reduce its impact on the environment. Among the measures is a major new photovoltaic facility, through which emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases associated with the Lamborghini car assembly process will be lowered by 30 per cent by next year. Lamborghini cars will also be modified and, in this way, the group is aiming to lower the carbon footprint of the vehicles themselves by 35 per cent within the next six years.
Lamborghini Photovoltaic Facility
Lamborghini’s factory is situated in Sant’Agata Bolognese. The photovoltaic site for here is scheduled to have been completed before 2009 is out. When up and running, the array of solar panels that comprise the Lamborghini photovoltaic facility will be capable of producing 1,582 MW-h (Megawatt-hours) of ‘clean’ electricity per annum. These solar panels will cover an area totalling more than 17,000 metres-squared, and they are being constructed by Sinergia Sistemi S.p.A.
The solar panels alone will lower CO2 emissions by a projected 20 per cent, but their performance will be augmented by other new technologies like improved insulation and better heating and lighting. In this way, the factory’s overall carbon footprint will be 30 per cent down in 2010.
Two months ago, Lamborghini acquired UNI EN ISO 14001 certification, meaning it was operating in line with international eco-standards. It is anticipated that it will also soon qualify for the highly-coveted EMAS certificate which, if obtained, will place it beyond all other Italian car manufacturers in terms of improvements made to its environmentally friendly profile.
Energy Efficient Lamborghini Cars
Lamborghini cars will be adapted so as to reduce the emissions they produce by over one third by 2015. The first part of this has already occurred with the 2008 roll-out of the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4, the technology incorporated into which reduced emissions by 18 per cent.
Future energy efficient Lamborghini cars will be created by focusing on a number of areas. These will include lowering weight and friction, improving fuel combustion and introducing biofuels. Overall, the firm intends to spend 35 million Euros in order to make these changes.
“Despite the difficult situation in today's global economy, Lamborghini is committed to its policy of environmental management, since we are well aware of the great opportunities that derive from it”, Lamborghini Chief Executive Officer and President Stephan Winkelmann commented.
“We have an objective to reduce CO2 emissions to the greatest possible degree. We have also set compulsory annual goals that are part of an integrated approach both considering the automobile as an element which is more considerate of the environment, in terms of emissions and the use of resources, to the accomplishment of a series of corresponding measures such as modifications to our factory.
“This is an important action for Lamborghini and a central opportunity for our long term corporate and product development.”
