Stagecoach GreenRoad Systems Boost Bus Efficiency

International transport group Stagecoach is to invest millions of pounds into new energy-efficient driving technology for buses on its UK routes.
Close to 14,000 Stagecoach drivers will start utilising the GreenRoad system from April 2011 in order to lower Stagecoach bus CO2 emissions, boost fuel efficiency and augment safety across the fleet. The integration of GreenRoad won’t involve Stagecoach’s London buses, but will involve the 6,500 buses that travel around other parts of England, along with Wales and Scotland, too.
At the heart of GreenRoad is an illuminated display that gives visual data on driving factors such as acceleration, braking and turning. This display operates in real time and its aim is to promote the most efficient driving practices, allowing Stagecoach drivers to reduce the company’s fuel bills by four per cent.
Energy Efficient Bus
Along with the new energy efficient bus technology, the firm is also introducing EcoDriver incentives, basically rewarding the drivers that do hit the company’s green goals.
“We already invest millions of pounds a year in driver training and new vehicles to offer our customers greener, smarter travel and ensure our drivers provide passengers with safe and comfortable journeys”, Stagecoach Bus UK’s MD, Les Warneford, stated in a company press release issued on 17 March.
“We have worked closely with our employees and trade unions to develop a system that is easy to use and will also reward excellent driving by our driving team. It will help deliver further benefits for our customers, reduce wear and tear on our vehicles, cut the cost of accidents, and help limit the impact of our operations on the environment.”
Stagecoach GreenRoad System
The Stagecoach GreenRoad system was trialled last year and 60 buses and 90 drivers got the chance to try it out. Associated fuel consumption levels dropped, while overall safety increased: the number of accident-free miles almost doubled.
“We started closely working with Stagecoach three years ago. The company’s depot managers and drivers have been instrumental in directing the development of the service with feedback on features and ease-of-use”, GreenRoad Europe’s General Manager, Aidan Rowsome, added.
“Stagecoach has invested much time and effort in evaluating various driver safety options. Its due diligence and commitment to excellence will pay dividends with a rigorous methodology for rolling out and using GreenRoad’s service as well as union buy-in and a driver incentive programme.”
