Barclays - Sustainability and Environment Policies

Barclays works to reduce its impact on the environment through the reduction of emissions (including those from employee travel), through efficient power use, through reduced water use by Barclays staff and through carbon offset schemes in Uganda, India and Kenya.

Emissions Reduction

Barclays is committed to reducing emissions across the business.  The company's UK carbon footprint is made up from around eighty per cent general energy use and twenty per cent company travel.

Barclays reduces its emissions through  the use of innovative, environmentally friendly and economically responsible technology.  Barclays works to reduce energy use and improve efficiency across the business.  The company is also reducing emissions from company flights and car use through a number of initiatives including the provision of video conference facilities, use of hybrid (fuel/ electricity powered) cars and assistance for staff purchasing bicycles.

Carbon Neutrality

Barclays also uses offsetting to ensure that the company is carbon neutral overall.  Emissions have been offset through investment in 'clean technology' and global community energy projects such as the provision of energy friendly stoves in Uganda, reducing deforestation due to local tree cutting for fuel purposes.  The company has also invested in Indian wind power and hydroelectric power in Kenya.

Climate Opportunities and Partnerships

In additional to internal measures to protect the environment, Barclays works to promote awareness of climate change for their clients and consumers.  This work includes products and services designed to help customers to reduce their carbon footprints and choose environmentally friendly alternatives.

Commercial initiatives include the Barclaycard Breathe, which rewards users for environmentally friendly purchasing and the Barclaycard Business Sustain, which helps businesses to offset emissions from air travel.  Barclays has traded over a billon tonnes in carbon credits and is helping to finance projects to reduce emissions around the world.

Barclays Commercial Bank is gaining recognition in the sustainable energy industry.  The company has given long term funding for over 2700 Megawatts of renewable energy generation from hydroelectricity and wind farms, sufficient to power over 1,450,000 homes for a year.

Barclays has worked with Green energy organisation, SolarAid, offering solar power for the developing world.  They have also collaborated, through their Barclays International Climate Change programme (BICC), with departments of the UK and Kenyan governments.
