CIWEM, the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, is the foremost investigating and workforce association for engineers, technologists, other green professionals, learners and anyone devoted to environmental organisation and handling of water and the natural world.
Water and Environmental Management
The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (Registered Charity no: 1043409) has gained experience in ecological management from as long ago as 1895. Since this time, engineers, technologists and other experts have joined to share their experience from a wide spectrum of environmental sciences. In its current form, CIWEM was established in 1987 through the merging of the Institution of Water Engineers and Scientists, the Institute of Water Pollution Control and the Institution of Public Health Engineers. In 1995, CIWEM gained a Royal Charter and celebrated its hundred-year anniversary.
CIWEMS targets and intentions are set down in the Royal Charter. These are:
- To further the technology and application of water and environmental management for the welfare of the public
- To encourage learning, investigation and research into environmental technologies and applications and the public release of this information to the advantage of all.
- To set down and uphold reasonable guidelines on the performance and expertise of all CIWEM associates.
Where 'water and environmental management' encompasses the use of technical, technological or administrative experience and skills, in the supply of facilities and services intended to enhance the favourable management, preservation and enhancement of the environment especially with regards to:
- Ecological administration systems
- Resource preservation, and application
- Centralised pollution regulation
- Public hygiene, hydration and water treatment
- Flood prevention, floodwater removal, and related leisure, service and preservation operations
