Verderflex is part of the Verder Group and is based in Leeds in the UK. The company supply peristaltic pumps for pumping fluids of any type including viscous and abrasive materials. Verderflex supply their pumps to a range of industries including water treatment, mining, food production, pharmaceuticals, packaging and printing.
Verderflex Pumps
Verderflex produce a variety of high quality peristaltic pumps. The range of Verderflex pumps includes the VF125, the largest hose pump in the world, able to pump 903m/hr and the innovative Dura pump. As a result of addressing issues with other pumps in the design stage the Verderflex Dura hose pump enjoys a range of benefits over equivalent pumps. These benefits include; a 70% smaller footprint than those of similar capacity, reduced energy consumption, reduced gearbox radial load, resistance to liquid cross contamination and simple servicing and maintenance.
Wastewater Pumps
Verderflex pumps make ideal wastewater pumps for treatment tasks including;
- Metering of treatment reagents and chemicals such as caustic soda, chlorinated water, ferric chloride, lime, polymers and powder activated carbon.
- The safe transfer of sludge
- Filtration of press feeds
The reason why peristaltic pumps are preferred for use as chemical dosing pumps for water and waste treatment is because the chemicals are not suited for use in other types of pump. Examples include;
- Abrasive materials such as lime cause progressing cavity pumps to wear excessively and diaphragm pumps to clog due to the viscosity of the lime.
- Ferric chloride off-gasses and can cause dosing pumps to vapour lock causing fluid to make its way through the system untreated.
- Certain polymers are shear sensitive, when pumped through progressing cavity pumps the size of the particles can be reduced which may lead to increased usage of the polymers.
- The high grit content of sludges can often cause increased wear in most types of pumps, especially ragging problems in rotary pumps.
Peristaltic Pump Design
The peristaltic pump designs from Verderflex are able to pump a variety of fluids safely and efficiently. The principal of peristalsis uses the alternating compression and relaxation of a hose. This action forces the fluid along the hose, the nature of the action also means that each cycle will pump the same amount of fluid each time, providing accurate metering and repeatability.
The liquid always remains in the tube and cannot come into contact with any moving parts. This means that the pump is completely hygienic, decreases instances of clogs and also reduces maintenance requirements. The lack of moving parts also means the pumps can handle thicker liquids such as slurries, sludges and wastewater.
Verderflex peristaltic pumps feature a roller that creates a permanent seal between suction and discharge sides of the pump. As the roller rotates it forces the fluids along the discharge hose, the vacuum created by the fluid moving along the pipe draws more fluid into the suction side of the hose. The vacuum created is the priming mechanism of the pump and can therefore self prime, it can also run dry and even pump liquids that off-gas such as yeast in brewing.
Peristaltic Pump Dosing
Peristaltic pump dosing tasks are simple and accurate due to the perfect seal created by the roller. The roller ensures there is no product slip and that there is a linear speed flow delivery.
Other features of the peristaltic pumps from Verderflex include;
- No seals that can cause leaks or corrosion
- The gentle pumping action is suitable for shear sensitive products
- Strong vertical suction lift - up to 9.5m
- Abrasion resistance
- Able to handle solids - up to 80% inorganic solids or 15% organic sludge
- Reversible pump for removing blockages
- Highly accurate dosing ±1% repeatability and ±5% metering capabilities
As well as Verderflex peristaltic pumps ability to handle a wide range of fluids and materials they can be interfaced with SCADA systems to give simple and highly accurate remote controlled dosing capabilities.
Verderflex will be displaying pumping solutions for water waste and environmental industries at IFAT this year. IFAT ENTSORGA is held in the New Munich Trade Fair Centre between 13 – 17 September 2010 and is set to be one of the most important shows of the year for waste and raw material management and we will be in Hall A6, Stand 312.
